Home ownership rates

Home ownership rates in New Zealand have been falling since the 1990s, but the 2023 Census data shows a small increase:

  • Overall: In 2023, 66% of households in New Zealand owned their home or held it in a family trust, up from 64.5% in 2018.
  • By age: Home ownership rates are higher for older people, and have fallen less for
